President Muhammadu Buhari has denied not having knowledge of the difficulties and hardship most Nigerians have been going through especially students in the Diaspora who have been adversely affected by the policies of the Central bank of Nigeria, CBN.
Buhari stated this during his maiden presidential media chat on Wednesday 30 December, 2015.
The President who was expected to address the dire situation which has crippled business activities in the country, hampering student’s abilities to make payment abroad dashed the hopes and aspirations of Nigerians when he said he was not aware and would ask the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN for clarification.
He said, “I am not aware, I promise to ask the CBN for clarifications. It is a very nasty situation we are in. We cannot fold our hands, we have to do something.
Buhari all through his speech did not provide direct answers to numerous questions that were asked by the panel of journalist as he said he would seek for more clarification an action which is unacceptable as he should have been briefed by his cabinet members as obtainable in other developing and developed countries of the world.
When quizzed on how his government was going to collect the data of unemployed youths and when, For the disbursement of N5, 000 stipends, he said, “It is in our manifesto the Ministry of Labour and Productivity will handle this.”
His response revealed that neither the president or his party, the All Progressive Congress, APC, have developed a template for the payment of the stipends an action which signifies the pace at which the government will operate in 2016 having been accused of running the government slowly this year thereby subjecting Nigerians to an untold hardship.
On borrowing to fund the budget, he said, “Government has no alternative, if it wants to create jobs and fix the infrastructure.
In the 2016 budget, Buhari disclosed that the sum of N1.84 trillion will be loaned from both local and foreign sources; thereby further indebting and mortgaging the future of Nigerians.
Post Nigeria had reported that in every given day of the year 2016, starting from tomorrow, Buhari will have to borrow N5.041 billion daily to run his government.
Most disheartening is that out of this loan, a whooping sum of N2.2bn would be spent on the President and the Vice President Food stuffs, refreshment, travels, as well as honorarium and sitting allowances.
N18.1 billion to run the State House, N39.8m for the purchase of an unspecified number of 200 amps, 100 amps and 60 amps Mercedes Benz batteries for bullet proof vehicles, while N30m to purchase tool boxes, car jacks, and diagnostic machines for the Presidency’s bulletproof cars among several other benefits.
According to financial experts, there is no difference between previous budget and that of Buhari’s change budget which budgeted more despite the president promise to cut cost in governance as the gulp of the 2016 budget will be expended on the presidency and the National Assembly.
