The member representing Owerri federal constituency, Chief Ezenwa Onyewuchi, has appealed to Imo State Government to halt the on-going demolition of residential buildings and business outfits in Owerri and it’s environs.
The lawmaker, who made the passionate appeal in Owerri, after receiving several complaints, protests and petitions, also expressed shock over the level of destruction of people’s homes and businesses by the state government. “I am honestly grieved by the massive demolition of private and commercial properties, including the Orji Mechanic Village.
The government needs to provide an accessible alternative location for the artisans and vehicle owners before relocating the mechanics”, Ezenwa said. He reminded the governor that most of the structures demolished were not only approved by government but have been in existence before the creation of the state.
On the planned demolition and relocation of Eke Ukwu Owerri market, the lawmaker called on the government to resist the temptation of desecrating the sacred history of Owerri people. “With proper planning, the filth and congestion associated with Eke Ukwu Owerri, can be managed and controlled to the barest minimum”, Onyewuchi reasoned.
Answering a question, Chief Onyewuchi said that while he remains a lover of sound development, “it should be executed with human face, especially at this time of severe economic hardship”. He also said: “Government should not arbitrarily impose her development plans on hapless, helpless citizens, through the wanton destruction of properties. Properties should be properly evaluated and compensation paid accordingly. Which should come first, is it payment of salaries and pension or road construction?”
