Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions over the comments made by the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) John Oyegun in the build up to the Rivers state senatorial rerun election.

John Oyegun has been accused of promoting election violence in Rivers state.

Oyegun had at a mega rally of the party in Port Harcourt called on APC members to retaliate any action they got from loyalists of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the election.

“If they slap you, slap them back.”

“We are sending one message, and that message is clear. It is that we respect you the people of Rivers state. We respect the courage of our members in this state. We want to let you know that we have heard your cry; we have seen your anguish; enough is enough. This is the beginning of a rescue mission,” Oyegun told party members.

But his message to party loyalists has sparked a backlash from some Nigerians who accused the APC chieftain of promoting election violence.

Reacting to Oyeguns’s message to party members, some Nigerians asked the politician to resign immediately for threatening the nations democracy.

The commentators also accused the APC and President Buhari of trying to turn Rivers state into a war zone in a bid to win the rerun election at all cost.

Read reactions from some Nigerians on the issue below:

Kelly Kelly: “This old man imagine, this people should resign from office been Apc, Pdp and give us peace. They are causing problems for the people of the country.

Osahen Ogbebor: “The thunderstorm that will fire oyegun is doing press up in hell fire idiot that can’t even win election in his own constituency in Edo state mumu.”

Izonkeme: “It is pathetic how Buhari and his cohorts are abusing human rights and destroying the hard earned democracy within a twinkle of an eye. The apc supporters and leaders should know they have taken our democracy to thirty years backwards and the undeserved paradise they are enjoying will be short-lived! Nigerians should stand up to any form of injustice and redeem this country from this elements of doom!”

Samuel Ayemhenre Oboh: “APC preaching of an eye for an eye is uncivilised and unacceptable. The wind that would follow such retaliation would do nobody any good. Except the government has given up on the various security agents, what needs to be done is provide adequate security arrangements that would be so watertight such that any trouble maker would be fished out and dealt with accordingly.”

Bernard Paul: “Bring your families to come help teach them how to slap on that day. Demons”

Obilo Word: “Oyegun Saturday is still a little far kindly bring in your own blood children to come and lead the line of violence during that election. You are here inciting violence while your children are in the comfort of your well ventilated mansion either here in Nigeria or at abroad.”

Ak Blixx: “See what an. Elderly man is saying! Encouraging violence! An apc chieftain fa!…instead of telling ur supporters not to result to violence! Is power by force! God will punish n hold you accountable for the souls of this young men you r advicing to go and die! Useless old man! Go put own children there na! rubish old politician!”

Kayode Odeyemi “Is this the change we voted for? God please save us from the CHAINS APC brought to us.”

Olusola Adediran: “It is a shame for Nigerian democracy to hear a politician like papa Oyegun to ask people to embrace violence it is such a barmy utterance.

However, a few Nigerians justified the Oyegun’s statement on the basis that Governor Nyesom Wike has in time past promoted election violence in River state.

See their reactions below:

Owaikhena eddie: “It is simple, tell Wike to stop threatening people.. you enjoy Wike,s threats but condemns that of APC that is simply telling it’s members to defend themselves from Wike, s thugs. if you slap me, I slap you. God no go vex.”

Arabakpura izonkeme: “They were merely telling Wike that he is not the only one that can incite violence with his incendiary rhetoric! Can’t you see that he is already cowed?”

Owaikhena: Fair enough. “This means if nobody slaps APC members, they won’t slap anybody and if nobody fights APC members, they won’t fight and that they won’t initiate any fighting and slapping and that they will only respond to acts of aggression This is OK.”

So where do you stand on the issue, is Oyegun right to preach the ideology of an eye for an eye?
