In a startling development in Owerri, Imo State, the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) uncovered five decomposing bodies, including that of a woman, in a forest opposite the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) Ihiagwa. This disturbing discovery, made during an operation based on intelligence reports, has raised significant fear and concern in the region.

The bodies, in advanced stages of decomposition, were located in a forest now infamous for its criminal activities, especially kidnapping. The operation, under the leadership of State Commander Dr. Fabian Iwuoha, involved more than 50 officers and was conducted with the approval and logistical support of the NHFSS national headquarters.

This discovery highlights the growing problem of criminal activities in the vicinity of Ihiagwa, FUTO, Federal Polytechnic Nekede (FEDPONEK), Avu, Obinze, Oforola, Umuokanne, Ngor Okpala, Egbu, and Nekede.

This escalation of criminality persists despite the presence of security forces, including the 34th field artillery brigade of the Nigerian army and the renowned Tiger base anti-kidnapping squad of the Nigerian police. Villagers Are being attacked at random and molested by these herder criminals on a daily basis.

Efforts by local entities to curb these crimes have been largely ineffective. Criminal acts, including frequent abductions, continue to plague even outer locations like Mgbirichi, Etche, Nmahu, and Egbema areas.

The worsening situation has put community safety and farming activities at grave risk, especially during night time. The NHFSS’s grim findings have brought this serious issue to light, leading to urgent calls for immediate and decisive action from the Imo State government and security agencies.

Serious concerns also center around varied criminal activities near Avu Junction, along the Port Harcourt road between Avu and Obinze. This area, notably where the Ama Hausa was relocated during Rochas Okorocha’s administration, is reputed to be a criminal haven, especially an alleged brothel. The local community has repeatedly demanded the clearance and sealing of this site, initially intended for the relocation of the Owerri prison, underscoring the critical need for governmental intervention.

In light of these alarming developments, there is an immediate and pressing demand for Governor Sen. Hope Uzodinma and the Imo State government to implement decisive measures. This should encompass arming and providing logistical support to local vigilante groups and coordinating with security agencies to confront the rampant criminality in these communities.

The findings of the NHFSS and the public outcry underline the need for a coordinated effort to protect the communities in and around Owerri from the surge in criminal activities.
