In June 2022, Bola Tinubu’s declaration of “Emi lokan” (It is my turn) during an event in Ogun State starkly underscored the self-centered ethos pervading Nigeria’s political scene. This proclamation, far from being a mere personal ambition, epitomized the widespread greed, self-indulgence, and egotism characterizing Nigerian politics. It unveiled a deeper, detrimental political philosophy where individual aspirations undermine collective welfare.

This prevalent “Emi lokan” mentality underscores a concerning trend across Nigeria’s political spectrum, from governors to the presidency. Such deep-rooted self-interest poses significant threats to governance and erodes public trust.

Rooted in the concept of egoism, the actions of Nigerian politicians demonstrate a troubling blend of self-centeredness and arrogance. This mindset fuels political corruption, enabling a pursuit of power and wealth at the public’s expense, significantly impeding national development and equity.

The consequences of this self-serving politics are far-reaching, consolidating power among a few and derailing democratic values and fair development. It breeds a culture of corruption and a deceitful engagement with the electorate, with politicians prioritizing their personal gains over national progress.

This approach not only stalls developmental efforts but also undermines confidence in public institutions, transforming the political domain into a self-enrichment arena rather than a platform for collective advancement.

Addressing these issues necessitates a departure from the “Emi lokan” mindset towards a more inclusive and altruistic political culture. It calls for collective action to hold political figures accountable, improve transparency, and demand higher leadership standards.

The ideology poses a direct threat to Nigeria’s democracy and its ability to address crucial economic and social challenges. With the country facing economic instability, including the Naira’s decline, and escalating security concerns, the need for leadership committed to the common good is paramount.

In essence, the “Emi lokan” philosophy significantly endangers the principles of democracy, equity, and public service in Nigeria. Overcoming this challenge requires societal unity to demand accountability from leaders and champion a political climate genuinely dedicated to the nation’s welfare.

The “Emi lokan” mindset, as showcased by Tinubu and other political leaders, contributes significantly to Nigeria’s current economic and security woes. This approach, prioritizing personal benefits over national interests, exacerbates the country’s instability and hampers progress.

Leaders consumed with personal gain overlook crucial sectors needing reform and development, leading to economic malaise characterized by inflation and unemployment. Such neglect diverts essential resources from areas critical for economic rejuvenation.

Corruption, a byproduct of this politics, deters investment, disrupts fiscal policies, and diminishes confidence in economic governance. This results in inefficient allocation of resources, further stifling economic growth.

Moreover, the security landscape deteriorates under this self-centered politics. Insufficient attention to security and the politicization of security measures inadequately address the causes of unrest, igniting further violence and discord.

Addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges demands transcending “Emi lokan” politics in favor of leadership that values inclusivity, accountability, and public welfare. Implementing policies that tackle the root causes of these issues, with a focus on education, opportunity, and fair resource distribution, is critical.

Ultimately, moving away from the “Emi lokan” mentality is essential for fostering a democratic environment that prioritizes the welfare and prosperity of all Nigerians, paving the way for a more stable and progressive nation.
