On this Democracy Day, we come together to reflect on the state of our nation and the journey of our Quasi democracy. The recent 2023 elections and the early days of President Bola Tinubu’s administration provide us with a unique opportunity to evaluate our progress and chart a course for the future.

The 2023 elections were marred by numerous challenges that underscore the persistent issues within our electoral process. Reports of electoral fraud, including ballot stuffing, vote buying, and result manipulation, were widespread, fundamentally undermining the integrity of our democratic process. These practices have led many to question the legitimacy of the election outcomes. Additionally, instances of violence, voter suppression, and intimidation created an environment of fear, discouraging many citizens from exercising their right to vote and further eroding confidence in the electoral system.

Logistical failures also played a significant role in disenfranchising voters. Inefficiencies in the distribution of election materials, malfunctioning voting equipment, and delayed voting in many areas contributed to a chaotic and disorganized process. These issues were compounded by a lack of transparency from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), whose opaque operations and delayed result announcements fueled founded suspicions of manipulation and completely diminished public trust in the electoral process.

As President Bola Tinubu’s government marks it’s first year, it faces numerous challenges that must be addressed to stabilize and progress Nigeria. Economic instability is a very pressing issue, with the country grappling with high inflation, a volatile currency, and increasing unemployment. Immediate economic reforms are necessary to stabilize the economy and promote growth. Rising levels of insecurity also pose a significant threat, from insurgencies in the North to banditry and kidnappings nationwide. These security challenges not only endanger the lives of citizens but also threaten the stability and unity of the country. Corruption remains a pervasive issue, hampering development and eroding public trust in government institutions. A strong anti-corruption stance and transparent governance are essential for rebuilding confidence and ensuring that resources are used effectively for the benefit of all Nigerians. Healthcare and education systems are underfunded and grossly inefficient, requiring urgent attention and investment. Addressing these sectors is crucial for the country’s long-term development and the well-being of its citizens. The issue of local government autonomy is also critical. Local governments should function independently to address the specific needs of their communities, but they have been stifled by state governors controlling their finances and decision-making processes. Ensuring local government autonomy is crucial for Nigeria’s democratic and developmental future.

The administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari was marked by several retrogressive policies and outcomes. Economic mismanagement was a significant issue, with Buhari’s tenure seeing a decline in economic stability, increased debt, inflation, and unemployment. Human rights violations were also a notable concern, with numerous reports of abuses, including crackdowns on protests, suppression of free speech, and unlawful detentions. Despite promises to improve security, Buhari’s administration struggled to contain the insurgency in the North East and other security challenges across the country. Weak institutions further characterized Buhari’s leadership, undermining the rule of law and allowing corrupt practices to flourish.

To navigate these challenges and align with current global trends, Nigeria must pursue several strategies. Reducing dependence on oil by promoting other sectors such as agriculture, technology, and manufacturing can drive sustainable economic growth. Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship will be key to this effort. Building strong, transparent, and accountable institutions that uphold the rule of law and combat corruption effectively is essential for restoring public trust and ensuring good governance. Comprehensive reforms that address both immediate threats and the root causes of violence, including poverty and lack of education, are necessary. A multifaceted approach to security will help create a safer environment for all Nigerians. Prioritizing funding for healthcare and education is crucial for building a healthy, educated workforce capable of driving future development. These investments will pay long-term dividends by improving the overall quality of life and productivity of the population. Ensuring that governance at all levels is inclusive, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people can foster a more vibrant democracy. Encouraging active citizen participation in the political process will help hold leaders accountable and ensure that government actions reflect the will of the people. Leveraging technology to improve governance, enhance service delivery, and drive economic growth can help modernize various sectors and make them more efficient. Digital transformation has the potential to revolutionize the way government operates and interacts with citizens.

Despite the challenges, there are numerous reasons to remain positive about Nigeria’s future. Nigeria’s rich natural resources, especially in agriculture, minerals, and a burgeoning tech sector, offer substantial potential for economic development. Efforts to diversify the economy away from oil dependence are gaining traction. Nigeria boasts one of the youngest populations in the world. This youthful demographic is a reservoir of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit. With the right policies and investments in education and skills development, this youthful energy can propel the nation forward. The rise of technology and innovation in Nigeria is a beacon of hope. Lagos, often dubbed the “Silicon Valley of Africa,” is home to numerous tech startups and innovation hubs. Continued support for tech ecosystems can lead to groundbreaking solutions that address local challenges and create global opportunities. Increasing engagement of citizens in political processes is a positive sign. The vibrant civil society, active media, and youth involvement in politics and advocacy are crucial for democratic consolidation. This growing civic engagement ensures that government accountability and transparency are continuously demanded. Nigeria’s cultural diversity is a source of strength and pride. The country’s rich tapestry of languages, traditions, and arts offers immense potential for cultural diplomacy, tourism, and the creative economy. Promoting cultural heritage can foster unity, national pride, and international recognition. Nigeria’s strategic position in West Africa makes it a crucial player in regional and continental affairs. Active participation in regional initiatives can enhance Nigeria’s role on the global stage and attract international partnerships and investments. Nigeria’s abundant natural resources, including oil, gas, and minerals, continue to provide significant economic opportunities. Responsible management and investment in these resources can drive economic growth, fund infrastructure projects, and support social programs.

As we reflect on this Democracy Day, it is clear that while Nigeria faces significant challenges, there are also immense opportunities for growth and improvement. By addressing the flaws in our electoral process, tackling the current administration’s challenges, and learning from past mistakes, we can build a stronger, more resilient democracy that truly serves the Nigerian people. The path forward requires collective effort, innovative thinking, and an unwavering commitment to the principles of democracy and good governance. With determination and a shared vision for a better future, Nigeria can overcome its challenges and achieve lasting progress.

Let us renew our commitment to building a better Nigeria. By working together to ensure transparent democratic processes, strong institutions, and inclusive governance, we can create a brighter, more prosperous future for all Nigerians.
