Former President Buhari Praises Lawmaker’s Humility and Initiative
The push for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has gained new momentum as Hon. Obi Aguocha, representing the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, held talks with former President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina State.
Hon. Aguocha’s visit aimed to seek Buhari’s intervention and support for a political dialogue that could resolve the ongoing detention and trial of Nnamdi Kanu. This initiative is seen as a step towards national reconciliation and unity.
In his discussion with Buhari, Hon. Aguocha stated, “For the missteps, utterances, and ill gestures of the past, especially from my constituent and brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I express deep regret.”
He emphasized that a political resolution would address the grievances of all parties involved and promote greater understanding and unity across the nation.
Former President Buhari welcomed Hon. Aguocha’s visit, commending his humility and dedication. He assured Aguocha that he was open to a political solution for Kanu’s release.
Recently, Hon. Aguocha led a coalition of 50 House of Representatives members from various political and ethnic backgrounds in signing a letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The letter urged President Tinubu to instruct the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alhaji Lateef Fegbemi, SAN, to invoke relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to facilitate a resolution.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure a political resolution for Nnamdi Kanu’s situation. The goal is to foster dialogue and non-contentious solutions to national issues, with the understanding that Nnamdi Kanu is willing to engage in building a new Nigeria characterized by peace, equity, justice, and prosperity.
