Nigerians’ seeming obliviousness to the massive sums of money allocated to governors, ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as the three tiers of government for development, is a glaring issue that demands attention. These funds, meant to propel the nation forward, are squandered by those entrusted with leadership, leaving the country in a state of stagnation. The lack of transparency and accountability has created a culture of impunity, where leaders prioritize personal enrichment over national progress.
The oil sector’s criminality, importation of petroleum products, and sabotaged refineries are mere symptoms of a larger problem – the mismanagement of funds and lack of accountability. The elite cabal’s grip on power perpetuates this cycle, maintaining a system that benefits them while the masses wallow in suffering. The nation’s wealth is plundered, and the people are left to bear the brunt of poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment.
Intending protesters must seize this moment to demand transparency and accountability, focusing on the core issues that have held Nigeria back for far too long. It’s time to shed light on the allocation of funds, tracing where they go and how they’re used. The people must demand answers and action from their leaders, pushing for a system that prioritizes the nation’s progress over personal gain. This includes scrutinizing budgetary allocations, tracking expenditures, and ensuring that projects are completed and benefit the people.
Furthermore, the culture of patronage and nepotism must be tackled head-on. Leaders must be held accountable for their actions, and the era of impunity must end. Institutions must be strengthened, and the rule of law upheld. The people must also demand a say in how their resources are managed, through participatory budgeting and inclusive decision-making processes.
By confronting these issues head-on, Nigerians can begin to dismantle the entrenched practices that have stifled development. It’s a call to action – to reclaim the nation’s wealth, to demand accountability, and to forge a path towards true progress and prosperity. The time for change is now, and the people must lead the charge. A new era of transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance can dawn on Nigeria, but it requires collective effort and a refusal to accept the status quo.
