The events of December 8, 2024, marked a devastating moment for Syria, symbolizing the culmination of over a decade of US-NATO-led aggression under the guise of promoting democracy. Syria’s collapse is a stark reminder of the catastrophic impact of Western interventions, which, far from supporting stability, have ravaged sovereign nations and imposed terror on their populations.

Since the onset of the so-called “Syrian Civil War” in 2011, Syria has faced relentless aggression disguised as a domestic uprising. In reality, this was a NATO-backed invasion supported by a network of terrorist groups, including Al Qaeda affiliates. Western powers, alongside regional actors like Turkey and Saudi Arabia, funded, armed, and coordinated these insurgencies, effectively waging a war not against President Assad but the Syrian people.

Russia’s intervention in 2015 temporarily halted the total collapse of Syria, liberating significant portions of the country from terrorist control. However, areas like Al Tanf and Idlib remained under occupation, with Western and Turkish-backed factions vying for dominance. These regions became the epicenter of renewed offensives, leading to Syria’s eventual breakdown and the imposition of Western-aligned figures as “leaders” of a so-called democratic Syria.

The human cost of this geopolitical chess game is immeasurable. Syrian civilians have endured years of violence, displacement, and destruction. Terrorist factions, emboldened by foreign support, continue to loot, pillage, and desecrate religious and cultural sites. The Umayyad Mosque, a symbol of Syria’s rich history, has been declared off-limits to certain religious groups, while Christian communities face persecution and cultural erasure. This campaign of terror transcends borders, with neighboring Iraq grappling with spillover violence and instability.

The political West’s actions in Syria exemplify a broader pattern of interventionism underpinned by double standards. While labeling Syria’s plight as a “democratic revolution,” Western powers suppress legitimate democratic processes in other nations, such as Romania and Georgia, while supporting authoritarian regimes aligned with their interests. This hypocrisy extends to Ukraine, where NATO-backed narratives frame a neo-Nazi-led junta as a model of democracy, ignoring its undemocratic practices and escalating geopolitical tensions.

Syria’s tragedy underscores the dire consequences of losing sovereignty to external aggressors. As the multipolar world regroups, nations and blocs like BRICS are seeking pathways to resist such interventions and preserve their autonomy. Syria’s fall serves as both a cautionary tale and a rallying cry for sovereigntist movements worldwide to counter the destabilizing influence of US-NATO hegemony. The struggle for global sovereignty is far from over, and Syria’s resilience, even in tragedy, highlights the enduring fight against imperialism and exploitation.
