As investigation into the looting of funds meant for the acquisition of arms for the Nigerian armed forces continues, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), not to hesitate inviting the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and present Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, to explain how the looted funds escaped his scrutiny; adding that the Commission should not be in a dilemma over what to do with the Emir if eventually found guilty since nobody is above the law.
Obasanjo, who said that Sanusi accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), of not remitting $20 billion of Oil proceeds into the national treasury, cannot be offended if officially invited to the EFCC office for clarification that questions his integrity and reputation.
“For the fact that Sanusi later became the Emir of Kano after being sacked as CBN governor, doesn’t make him untouchable. He is a Nigerian and must be answerable to every activity under his watch.
“I learnt the operatives of EFCC are keen on interrogating the Emir on the numerous disbursement of funds to the office of the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (Rtd), who is being tried for money laundering, breach of public trust and diversion of public funds.
“What is keeping the pace of the EFCC slower than expected on Sanusi? If the Commission really wanted to work, I think it’s high time Sanusi was called upon for interrogation,” OBJ said.
The former Head of State said: “Going to the Emir in Kano to get the traditional and religious ruler who is like every other respected monarch in the country, to speak to you as a Commission fighting corruption on what he knows about the huge sums of money looted from the nation’s apex bank under his watch and under the guise of security, is completely embarrassing and belittles your credibility and proficiency.
“If with President Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade, the EFCC as an integral part in the fight against the menace, could still be entertaining fear on whether to invite anybody for questioning, clarification and getting first-hand information, probably because of the status of such individual, then I’m not sure the crusade can succeed in fighting the ugly monster called corruption.
“While fighting corruption, big toes will be stepped on. It should be clearly noted. If EFCC is trying to interview or interrogate the Emir in a way that would not raise any eyebrow or bring the Commission into trouble with any individual or ethnic group, then the Commission is not ready for the task ahead.”
