I am writing this post with a lot of caution and trepidation. I have never subscribed to ethnic chauvinism and I actually detest being labelled as a tribal bigot. I am usually very careful because I have friends and colleagues from every part of the nation and some of my best friends are not even from my side of the country.

However, recent events are making me to have a deeper reflection and I wish we- Southerners in this instance- can have some kind of introspection. Out of 25 appointments made so far, 18 are from the North, 3 are from the South West, 4 are from the South South while the South East has ZERO appointments. A tweet which I saw today stated that “southerners are only competent when it’s time for elections but northerners are competent in terms of governance” and this made the following thoughts run through my mind:

1. Only Southerners have been accusing fellow Southerners of corruption. Oshiomole has been attacking Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as if Ngozi turned down his marriage proposal. The same Oshiomole tried to make nonsense of Akinwumi Adeshina’s successes in the agriculture sector. Ambode tried to pull Fashola down and successfully smeared him with stains. Maybe that’s why Fashola did not get the Chief of Staff role. I’m yet to see a Northerner accuse another Northerner of corruption, even when they belong to different parties. The closest a Northerner got was when the new Kano State Governor attacked Rabiu Kwankaso but he quickly sheathed his sword and even disowned previous reports of attacks. Why are we like this?

2. Are Southerners the only ones who are corrupt? Were there no northerner heading the ministries and parastatals? Did the outgone Comptroller-General of Customs, Abdullahi Dikko not have an alleged case of certificate forgery but he still served out his tenure until he resigned voluntarily? I’m not in support of corruption under any guise but the fight against corruption must not be seen to be sectional.

3. How come it’s easier for the President to believe that Sanni Abacha was not corrupt in spite of recovered loot while it is so easy for him to believe Goodluck Jonathan is irredeemably corrupt?

4. I still remember that aside from God, Tinubu made Tambuwal what he is today. The same Tambuwal would later call Femi Gbajabiamila ‘incompetent’ and rated Dogara as more competent. The same Tambuwal was propped up by Tinubu, a Southerner against a fellow Southerner, Mulikat Akande. Obasanjo was very key to denying Goodluck Jonathan a second term. A good number can still recall how OBJ tore his PDP membership card in public glare. The Northerners find it easy to support themselves but we are always pulling ourselves down. Babangida Aliyu, Sule Lamido and all the other Northern Governors including the former PDP Chairman Adamu Muazu often times refused to campaign for Goodluck Jonathan openly and many times even espoused the virtues of the opposing candidate on the rostrum!

5. Southern leaders and Presidents pull down Southern business men but prop up Northern ones. How many people still remember how Obasanjo ran Mike Adenuga out of town but both Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan made Aliko Dangote what he is today. No northern leader goes against their own. I dare to put it on record that President Buhari will never go against Aliko Dangote for any reason.

6. How come OBJ pardoned Salisu Buhari, the ex-Speaker who forged his credentials and he later was given an appointment as a Governing Council member of a University and heavens did not fall- but when Goodluck Jonathan pardoned Alamieyeseigha it became one of the major issues counted against him? Is there one rule for some and another rule for others?

7. We find it easy to raise our voices in support of the deportation of Buruji Kashamu but have no qualms with Atiku Abubakar strutting around the corridors of power.

8. Only Southerners find it so easy to abuse their elders when they voice opinions not in tandem with the popular opinion. We find it easy to diss Afenifere elders and call them ‘Afenifebi’ while hurling expletives and curses at them. We even abuse our kings and priests. Northerners will never abuse an Emir no matter how unpopular what he said is. Can you imagine any Northerner raising his voice against the Sultan? In spite of Tanko Yakassai, Balarabe Musa and Dangiwa Umar’s perceived support for Jonathan, northern youths did not abuse them. But our own youths run down our elders on social media while our educated elite also support the act.

These are some of the thoughts that have been running through my mind. I don’t pretend to have all the answers and I do this at the risk of being labelled an ethnic bigot. The point however is that Southerners have to get their acts right. We have to put our house in order. The bickering must stop. Let’s engage our emotional intelligence. Let’s not allow others to exploit our tendency to self-destruct.

    1. Seem, Arab culture indicates that only a nonArab can bring down another Arab. That is why it is said , Bush was able to bring down Sadam because he used the head of Kwit who was half British. Maybe, most Northerners see themselves as Arab first ad Nigerian second. Southerners should understand that and use it to their advantage by sticking together. So Southerners should adopt this principle and live by it. For a circle is as strong as its weakest link.

You rank and run very low on IQ,otherwise, you won’t rationalize the natural tendency and attitude of Southerners to self-destruction on some regional divides which exist in the South, because the same also applies in the North. The monolithic and cohesive nature of the Northerners is more of in the mindset than undivided geographical bloc. It’s something that was inculcated and fostered by their founding fathers, especially,Ahmadu Bello, to serve Northern dominionist agenda and political interests, from historical perspective. The division you see in the South today and the self-destruction lifestyle were all planted by the Northern elites and nurtured till this day,so that Southerners never get to organise, coordinate and assert themselves to regain their proper place in the nation-state called Nigeria.Like it or not, this is the simple truth!

Nigeria is not a country but an experimented gathering of various religious, ethnic and tribally divided Africans madness by Britain to the world that Africans and Black’s cannot prosper yet looking at the various European Nations added up are not populated like Nigeria. Why on earth should an over populated Black Africans live together as Nigerian’s.

  6. Very True Madam Okonjo Iweala. There is so much hate and backstabbing, hypocrisy, deceit, lying, cheating, self destruct etc in the South, and it is rather unfortunate. Love is the opposite of hate, but that is what we lack most in the South. I am happy this is coming from you Madam because you are equally quilty of this same write up. When you were the Hon. Minister of Finance, i personally made many efforts to have audience with U In Your esteemed office, but each time I was sent away by your Igbo speaking security and personal apparatus which you sorrounded yoursel with. On one of that occasion having manipulated my way from the gate at the ground floor to your office, your Security apparatus almost gave me a slap. Every one in the South is guilty of this self destruct. Take another example at what Liyel Invoke did to the person of Victor Ndoma Egba. A man that had climbed to the position of Senate Leader. Today, the story is different. That is the way we are. It is just sad and unfortunate.

The are hypocrites averagely lazy and depending on the crumbs from the Masters’ table. Assuming average northerners are adventurous, they would have challenge the few elites and oligarchical ruling system that has largely puaperized them to date. We in the southern part are not like them and we not be. We are very independent minded and free thinkers that combine to give impression that we work against each other. This is my take

I bet Jaxagony6 is another Igbo man or woman who hates yoruba race for whatever reasons. Will a fellow Igbo man not be the first to rubbish or envy another Igbo man over money or political position? It’s obvious the way Igbos attack Okorocha, Imo State Gov for being a successful APC man.

I do not believe my idol ,Ngozi Okonjo Iweala , wrote this because she knows why the North behaves the way they do not only in Nigeria but all over the world they can easily be convinced nd at time confused, that is why the fanaticism nd jihad is possible on their end.If the Biafrans are of Fulani tribe there would have been suicide bombers but every Igbo man believes he can manage nd make amends thus not ready for suicide. As long as the south west could not accept the other southerners ,because of Islam, the North will always dominate, why did all yorubas keep quiet nd felt unconcerned with all the intimidations of PMB,no federal character in appointments nd western press kept cool could it be only because most of them have scars nd thus afraid of PMB nd EFCC but I believe it more likely because they are all moslem.

  12. Yes, Southerners are not united as our northern brothers, but one thing is clear : if a Northerner is given a contract job to execute, the contract will be executed, because he loves his people. Give a contract job to a Southerner, that job will be abandoned. This is because he doesn’t love his brother. When it comes to employment, same act of love and hate goes. Therefore, the Southern problems are self inflicted problems and never caused by the Northerners. Our Chiefs, kept moving from one political office to the other, begging for money, but Emirs, it’s the political office holders that pays visit to the Emirs. Until, we start loving ourselves else, even though at the end Nigeria disintegrate, the problems would still be there. Therefore, coming here to talk would not solve the problem. Let’s I forget, remember Dasuki’s arms scandal. He’s a Northerner being prosecuted. We must do things right all the time, and stop all these unnecessary sentiments.

  13. Pre-independent Nigeria should be a big lesson for the south not just South East but the entire south. I have never subscribed to ethnicity or tribalism in this country, but events of late is an eye opener. Many things are being planned and errcuted by this government as if this is the last time a northerner will be president of Nigeria. Well when a woman marries two husbands she will testify. We as a country is drifting dangerously to something that will be worst than Rwanda of Somalia if we do not retrace our steps and stop this promotion of ethnicity and religious intolerance. The government of the day should arrest this drift or else the story will not never be palatable. Buhari should count himself lucky to be in the saddle today, a country of 180 million people to preside twice in one life is extreme luck, he should count his blessings and be a blessing to a country which has given him so much in wealth and fame, he should stop this inordinate ambition of conquerrring the south, his forefathers othman Dan fodio tried it but did not succeed, embrace all part of Nigeria that is what your mandate says, live in peace with yourself stop looking for people to punish, let efcc only inform Nigerians of those convicted not those suspected that is the way to go

In the South, they apply the principles of divide and conquer by pretending to love the Igbo neighbors and attempting to isolate the Igbo, that’s why they will give the Yoruba the bone, throw some crumbs at South South,
and nothing for the South east and these southerners will be doingThanksgiving for getting something.

This things are not new to southers, especially the Igbos. It’s in our blood to call a spade by its name, but it baffles me when a yoruba man can not jst stand for a truth. Can you imagine that upon the bravery and truthful nature of Fani Kayode and Fayose statements on this lopsided corruption fighting by President muhammadu buhari, a yoruba man will still open mouth and call these two men idiots. According to them, they will not support Fani kayode and Fayose to avoid losing the benefits the get from the presidency. U see, jst watch there reactions to tthis. I thank God that the south is awake now. The truth must be told and it does not change, call another southerner and that’s what you will hear.southerner. The North and the south have nothing in common, different ideology, different religion, different belief, food , anything you can not think of. But the truth is that if u believe yourself and you actually love peace to rein, the let the country break and that will bring progress and everlasting peace. Yorubas need to believe themselves right now and dont think u can not do well if this village breaks. Nigerian youths are tired of this Muslim Housa fulani, and I’m speaking on their behalf. Marginalization has become normal. Any southerner esp the Biafran that tries to raise head will be brought down with Muslim policy, But this time even a grandma in the village is ready to die for the Biafra restoration, We are tired. Buhari is convinced we are leaving the country any moment, and that’s his reason for his appointments. Thank God the writer is no more sleeping, he is now convinced that Nigeria is wicked and there is high need to break the country.

  22. What an interesting commentary! Seems, the Arab culture dictates that only a non-Arab can bring another Arab down. That is why it is suggested Bush was able to use the head of state of Kuwait who was half British to bring down Sadam.
Maybe, some Northers see themselves as Arab first and use this principle as a foundation for Governmental practices. Maybe, Southerners should adopt and practice this same principle to our advantage. See ourselves as Southerners first and work together. Agree to disagree on other things but agree to utilize their own code of silence as the Northerners do when it comes to corruption. Before everything is taken away. We should thank the British for facilitating this. Seem the South is destroyed the South but it is like; we never learn.
It was said, recently by a Northern official, the plan is, never to let the South (Igbos) go. So, with everything happening around us. We can conclude that the strategy is; to take away our power, destroy our financial base by accusing Southerners of corruption. Turn them against each other. Take away monies. Destroy or prevent physical development, distract the Igbos from their goals. To make slaves out of them. Those Northerners understand the concept that “a circle is as strong as it’s weakest link.’ The south/ south should understand that too.

This is so full of generalization it boggles the mind what anyone expect to be the outcome of the writer’s conclusion. Is corruption a sectional vice? What virtues or honor is extolled by this writer? I’m disappointed that there are still people not only acting the ways the article suggested if the alleged sectionalisms are true but more dismayed that ‘southerners ‘ are being urged to emulate. How will this advance the nation?
