“My boy, may you live to your full potential, ascend to a dizzy height as is possible for anyone of your political description in your era to rise. May you be acknowledged world-wide as you rise as an eagle atop trees, float among the clouds, preside over the affairs of fellow men…. as leaders of all countries pour into Nigeria to breathe into her ear.

But then, Chuba, if it is not the tradition of our people that elders are roundly insulted by young men of the world, as you have unjustly done to me, may your reign come to an abrupt and shattering close. As you look ahead, Chuba, as you see the horizon, dedicating a great marble palace that is the envy of the world, toasted by the most powerful men in the land, may the great big hand snatch it away from you. Just as you look forward to hosting the world’s most powerful leader and shaking his hands, as you begin to smell the recognition and leadership of the Igbo people, may the crown fall off your head and your political head fall off your shoulders.

None of my words will come to pass, Chuba, until you have risen to the very height of your power and glory and health, but then you will be hounded and humiliated and disgraced out of office, your credibility and your name in tatters forever…”

    Folks, I had corrected the tall tale of Zik-Okadigbo brouhaha elsewhere. Here goes again, and may we continue to respect our elders … no matter the level of provocation. 🙏🏾

    Chuba Okadigbo denied making the apocryphal “ranting of an ant” statement. He used an Igbo proverb *in Igbo* — to explain to an Igbo reporter — the still- relevance of Zik in the scheme of things, despite his electoral loss.
    Hear him: _*I debe nti n’ana, i ga-anu ugoli agbisi.*_ If you keep your ears to the ground (listen carefully), you will hear the footsteps of ants!

    The reporter went to town with “ranting of an ant.” Ants do not rant; chant, maybe!

    This is why we don’t use proverbs in communicating with children. No, he was not a child; maybe, just maybe, he was from _ebe ‘ke anyi_ and didn’t grasp the nuances of Oyii Anambaraesque speak. Truth be told, how many folks outside Iguedo clan know what _ugoli_ means?

    Another version of the proverb could have cleared the misunderstanding. Take a read: *_I dewe nti n’ala, i ga-anų égwú igba danda._* (that is,… the drumbeats of ants). In either case, it has nothing to do with ants. Zilch. It means that there is a uneasy quiet, the muteness of the morgue or the silence of the cemetery.

    On the false news of Owele’s demise, it was a regrettable media snafu; it cannot be attributed to the indomitable Oyii n’Oyii.

    May their souls and other dear departed denizens continue to rest unperturbed. 🙏🏾 _Isée!_
