THE THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE IGBO: By Nnamdi Ekweogu.

I’ve met a lady from Barbados way back then during Yahoo messenger era, when I told her I was Nigerian, she told me she’s Igbo, her husband Igbo, I then told her I’m Igbo too. She was so shocked and elated, she started pleading with me to tell her more about Igbo history and send her pics of different festivals. She went further to tell me her sister’s husband is Yoruba.
When I prodded further on her findings, she said she went to a DNA bank in Canada to confirm her ancestry.

In my secondary school way back then, we had this chic from Barbados too. She came back to Nigeria briefly to spend time, then enrolled in my school. She said she’s Igbo from Arochukwu, but she’s Barbadian. That there are tons of blacks there that traced their origin to Igbo.

Igbos(Ebo/Eboe/Heebo) were very popular during the slave trade era: for their copper-like skin,(the whites were fascinated to meet among blacks a light skinned group), hardworking spirit and for their ability to revolt against the whiteman’s treatment. Igbos are typical to revolt against injustice or unbalanced system even till now: (IPOB and Biafra comes to mind).

Kindly Google “Bussa”: Bussa was an Igbo man that led more than 400blacks against the colonial masters in present day Barbados. The Barbadian parliament recognized and honoured him with a National Day and he’s also on the 5c note of the Barbadian Dollar.

Jamaicans and Haitians have an Igbo diety they worship till date. When you listen to Jamaican patios you’ll hear clear Igbo words that mean same thing in Igbo language.

A one time President of Haiti confirmed his Igbo heritagd. Some of these Igbos retained their names after the end of the slave era, when lots of blacks were dumped in Monrovia and Freetown. That’s why in Sierra Leone you’ll hear names like Chukwuma, Kanu etc.

An Igbo man Edward James Roye (1815-1872) later became the fifth President of Liberia. Just like we have vestiges of Yoruba heritage is Cuba and Brazil, that’s how Igbo heritage is in Jamaica, Haiti, West Indies like: St. Lucia, Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago.
