The South West geo political zone of Nigeria became a political swing region since 2011. It swung and elected two Presidents: former President Goodluck Jonathan and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari. This has not been lost on political strategists.
Prior to 2015 presidential election, the handlers of President Jonathan saw the hand writing on the wall and moved in to placate the zone. It renamed the University of Lagos after the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. That gesture was an act of desperation and Nigerians were not deceived. Jonathan was voted out. Critically, The gesture was rejected.
We are now on the march again to elect a President in 2019 and we have another drowning President searching for a lifeline. He immediately realized that a great opportunity exists in the South West corridor where research has shown him trailing the opposition.
President Buhari is aware that the South West and indeed Nigerians are desirous for the national government to honour the great hero of democracy and acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He struck and declared June 12 a national holiday and democracy day. He equally honoured the acclaimed winner of that election with GCFR, the highest in the land.
Nigerians are happy for this gesture and we welcome same with open arms. However, 2019 presidential election will not be determined by a post humous award to late Chief MKO Abiola. NEVER.
2019 will be determined by the hunger in the land, the insecurity of lives and properties under the Buhari administration, the elevation of nepotism as state policy, the decayed health care facilities in the country, the over 10m jobs that vanished under the current administration, the huge corruption presently going on, etc.
The present administration has ridiculed our democracy and brought governance institutions to absolute ridicule. The great MKO Abiola stood for democracy, rule of law and protection of the oppressed. Buhari is deficient in these noble characteristics of our MKO.
More importantly, when nation builders were protesting the incarceration of Abiola, the current President was an integral part of the regime that denied us the fruits of the mandate we freely gave to a detribalized and wonderful Nigerian.
Abiola was elected because Nigerians saw in him a great Unifier, job creator and detribalized. Nigerians believed that Abiola saw religion as one’s personal relationship with God and not a state policy.
The above attributes of Abiola are what we need to move our country forward and 2019 will mark the beginning of that journey.
Only a man with his qualities will suffice in 2019. A drowning incumbent can not ride on the nobility of MKO Abiola to rescue himself and position himself for further destruction of our great country.
May the noble soul of Bashorun MKO Abiola continue to rest in perfect peace. Amen.
