The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, has subtly hinted at a possible bid for the Nigerian presidency in 2027. In a recent interview with Arise Television’s Rufai Oseni, Adesina opened up about his future plans and his readiness for national service, sparking widespread speculation about his political ambitions.

Adesina, who has led the AfDB since 2015, reflected on his unwavering connection to Nigeria and his deep commitment to the country. When asked about his plans after his tenure at the bank, he shared a profound story of his decision to retain his Nigerian passport despite having opportunities to obtain U.S. citizenship.

“You know, I had the opportunity to get a U.S. visa and eventually citizenship,” Adesina recalled. “I didn’t want it, not because I don’t like America. My kids were born there and are Americans. But for me, this Nigerian passport, this green passport, represents something sacred. God didn’t make a mistake in making me a Nigerian. I believe this passport will be respected globally someday, and I want to be part of the reason why.”

Adesina’s pride in his Nigerian identity stood out in his remarks, as he recounted the challenges faced when traveling on the Nigerian passport. Despite the frustrations, he expressed an unyielding sense of purpose, seeing himself as a tool in the hands of God to help transform lives. He emphasized that true respect is earned, not begged for, and affirmed his belief in divine providence guiding his path.

While many Nigerians have called for Adesina to enter politics in the past, he previously distanced himself from the idea. Notably, in 2022, ahead of the 2023 elections, a coalition of 28 groups purchased the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination form for him, but Adesina declined to participate in the race. His recent comments, however, suggest that he may be reconsidering his stance, fueled by his desire to contribute to Nigeria’s development on a broader platform.

Adesina’s use of a popular Nigerian song to illustrate his point added a touch of humor and relatability to the interview. Referencing Davido’s hit track “Unavailable,” Adesina joked, “In the case of service, I would ask Davido to change that song to, ‘I am available, they will see me.’” This playful remark underscored his message that he is ready to serve in any capacity where God places him, including national leadership.

Adesina’s tenure as Minister of Agriculture under former President Goodluck Jonathan earned him widespread recognition for implementing reforms that boosted agricultural productivity and improved food security in Nigeria. His work at the AfDB has further cemented his reputation as a visionary leader, with a focus on infrastructure development, industrialization, and financial empowerment across Africa.

Adesina’s potential candidacy would undoubtedly shake up the political landscape. His technocratic background, global experience, and track record of impactful service present a compelling alternative to the status quo. Many Nigerians, weary of the same political faces and practices, may see Adesina as the kind of leader who can steer the nation toward progress and prosperity.

While Adesina has yet to make an official announcement, his statement has already set tongues wagging. His emphasis on humility, service, and national pride resonates with a growing segment of Nigerians who long for leaders driven by a sense of mission rather than personal gain. Should he decide to run in 2027, Adesina may very well become a formidable contender for the highest office in the land.

For now, all eyes remain on the AfDB president as Nigerians ponder the implications of his words. Could Adesina be the leader to unite the country, restore confidence in governance, and drive the transformation he has long championed? Time will tell, but for many, his declaration of availability is already a spark of hope for a brighter future.

One response to ““I’m Available” – AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina Hints at 2027 Presidential Ambition”

  1. Akinwunmi is a technocrat no doubt, but he doesn’t have the guts to touch the North the way PBAT is doing! We need to RESTRUCTURE Nigeria, we can’t continue like this!
