Just as businesses are required to Know Your Customer (KYC) before entering into a transaction, citizens must also Know Your Candidate (KYC) before casting a vote.
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, every voter should ask a simple but fundamental question: Who exactly am I voting for?
Do you know the candidates contesting in your ward, your local government area, your federal constituency, your senatorial district, and your state? Have you taken time to examine their records, their values, their achievements, and their vision?
Democracy is not merely about participating in elections. It is about making informed choices.
The 2027 elections present Nigerians with a unique opportunity to choose differently and choose wisely. Party loyalty has its place, but competence, character, accessibility, capacity, and performance should matter more than party labels. If the most suitable candidate is not in your preferred political party, then support the individual whose record and vision you can confidently live with for the next four years.
Before supporting any candidate, ask critical questions:
What is the candidate’s educational and professional background?
What has the candidate achieved outside politics?
What is the candidate’s reputation within the community?
How does the candidate treat people when there are no cameras present?
What values define the candidate’s family and personal life?
Has the candidate demonstrated integrity and public service before seeking office?
Voters must also learn to distinguish between genuine philanthropy and political patronage.
True philanthropy is not seasonal. It does not suddenly emerge during election periods. Genuine compassion is demonstrated consistently, often when there is little expectation of political reward. A person who only becomes generous when seeking votes should be carefully scrutinized. Political empowerment programmes should not blind voters to the larger question of competence and character.
Nigeria’s political history is filled with examples of individuals who entered public office with modest means and left as extraordinarily wealthy men and women. It is also filled with examples of successful businessmen who entered politics promising efficiency but eventually treated public institutions as private enterprises.
Public office is not a business investment. It is a public trust.
Citizens must therefore be cautious about handing control of public resources to individuals whose primary motivation may be access to state funds, contracts, or influence. Government exists to serve the people, not to enrich political actors.
Experience also matters.
Candidates seeking executive positions, particularly governorships, should possess sufficient exposure to functioning systems, institutions, and best practices. Exposure does not automatically guarantee good governance, but leaders who have experienced efficient healthcare systems, quality education, effective transportation networks, and accountable public institutions are often better positioned to understand what is possible and what should be demanded for their own people.
No society develops by lowering standards.
At the local government level, voters should consider proven community leaders, professionals, technocrats, educators, activists, and individuals with a demonstrated commitment to public service. Public office should not be viewed merely as the next rung on a political ladder or an extension of business interests.
The future of our communities, states, and nation depends largely on the quality of people we elect.
The era of voting based solely on ethnicity, religion, political patronage, handouts, slogans, or emotions must come to an end.
Know your candidate.
Interrogate their record.
Examine their values.
Study their capacity.
Understand their vision.
Then vote not for who can spend the most money, but for who can deliver the greatest progress.
The choices we make in 2027 will determine whether we advance as a nation or continue repeating the mistakes of the past.
Choose wisely today, so that you do not spend the next four years regretting your decision.
