Protocols. Let me begin by extending my deep sense of gratitude to the Royal Institute of International Affairs, for inviting me to participate in this current series of discussions on, Next Generation Nigeria: Accountability and National Cohesion. The involvement of this reputable British Institute in discussing and proffering suggestions for extant Nigeria’s problems is not only commendable, but I believe most relieving for the British establishment, who must understandably feel a deep sense of vicarious responsibility for putting together a country confronted with such grim future. Nigeria became a united British colony by the amalgamation of its Northern and Southern…

I believe the Igbo should have their Biafra because I find no single positive reason why we must live as one nation while other people closer to us than the Igbo are having separate nations. As a man without colonial mentality, I do not allow colonial hangover to becloud my reason. There is already Biafra. No Hausa dares dream of going to the east for whatever reason. So where is the One Nigeria? Is it not better to make the separation formal so that we can trade freely and and even send ambassadors? Can’t you see how we ralate with…

An Igbo proverb goes that, Ijiji ne nweghi onye ndumodu n’eso ozu ana. (The fly that ignores wise counsel always ends up at the grave with the corpse). That is where Nigeria finds itself today with President Muhammadu Buhari . Rather than embrace simple dialogue , as canvassed by well-meaning Nigerians , Buhari chose to attend to the current Biafran crisis by brute force . Not unexpectedly, human casualties ensued , thereby swelling global sympathy for Biafra . To douse the current, Buhari quickly proscribed the Biafran youths as terrorists . As if that singular act lacks in folly, the…

Greetings, Your Excellencies, the governors of the land of the Rising Sun. It is with a heart burdened with sorrow that I write you today to register my grave displeasure over your criminal complicity in the woes of the people you purport to preside over. With your permissions, Your Excellencies, I will like to start this piece with questions which have dug a very deep hole in my heart for a very long time and the questions are: Whose interests are you representing as governors? Where does your loyalty lie? Why does it seem like your dominant default instinct is…

1.1. There is nothing like military democracy. It is democracy, pure and simple – government of the people, by the people and for the people – practicing rule of law, where the security and welfare of citizens are paramount, without discrimination of tribe religion, sex, ethnic origin etc administering justice equally between the rich and poor, the mighty and the low, the educated and the illiterate, man and woman, Muslim, Christian and traditionalists, North and South. 1.2. Armies do not arrest civilians. Police do. Armies are not stationed against a peaceful people, or demonstration. Armies intervene where it is beyond…

The Federal Government has gazetted the order of the Federal High Court in Abuja which proscribed the Indigenous People of Biafra and designated the group as a terrorist organisation. The gazetting was part of the requirements imposed on the Federal Government by the court to finalise the proscription of the group. The Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdu Kafarati, had, on September 20, issued the proscription order upon an ex parte application by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN). Justice Kafarati, who heard the AGF’s motion in chambers,…

1. Our country is passing through turbulent times. This seems to be as a result of the growing culture of impunity, greed and graft among the political elite, as well as the injustice and inequity in political appointments and the distribution of social amenities. While public officers and their cronies obscenely amass ill-gotten gains at the expense of the masses, the growing army of unemployed youths are daily assailed by deepening frustration as they behold a future that seems to promise them little or nothing. Consequently, agitations of disillusionment and dissatisfaction are growing louder across the nation, especially in the…

Rest In Peace Rashidi Yekini. Yekini remains the man who scored the highest number of international goals for Nigeria (37). Portugal fondly remembered him on the 18th of August. But here in his home country Nigeria, not a mention, not to talk of a remembrance celebration. What a government. There is urgent need to change the change ASAP.

I was in the first cabinet that was overthrown by the military in this country. I entered parliament on December 12, 1959. And I remained in Parliament until January 15, 1966, when the Government was overthrown. I was the Federal Minister of Education in that cabinet. I woke up in the morning in my official house in Ikoyi to discover that my telephone was not working. I had never experienced coup before nor did I know that it was a coup, thinking it was just a telephone fault; until a colleague of mine in the cabinet Chief Abiodun Akerele, came…

Former Minister of Education, Professor Tunde Adeniran, Thursday declared his readiness to deliver the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) back to the presidency in 2019, if he emerges the national chairman of the party in the December 2017 national convention of the party. The Professor of Political Science stated this while playing host to members of the Concerned PDP Mid-Rangers (CPDPMR) who paid him a solidarity visit at his campaign office in Abuja. Adeniran, who was a one time Ambassador to Germany, also pledged to put an end to impunity and imposition of candidates which he said, scuttled the growth of…

Our attention has been brought to an interview published on pages 46-47 of The Nation Newspaper of Sunday, September 24, 2017, granted by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay (SAN). In the said interview, Sagay described the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “the most unprincipled group of people” who are “encouraging and accepting rogues” in the party. He said: “When I say ‘rogues’, I don’t mean stealing. In literature, when you say someone is a rogue elephant, it means people who are running riot and destroying the party.” The Webster…

For 35 years, Anthony Enahoro, Afenifere, Ben Nwabueze, OPC, ọhaneze, MEND, MASSOB, Awolowo, and other reputable Nigerians tried and begged for restructuring, the north rebuffed them. No body even took them serious. Nobody listened. Then a little known rabble-rouser ran a pirate radio station from his matchbox room in Peckham. In three years he made the hitherto unfashionable and impossible thing central to our national politics. Elrufai was in London yesterday talking restructuring. They fought in Ondo in a meeting on restructuring, there is a Yoruba declaration. Northern elders are shifting ground while pretending to grandstand. You don’t have to…

Nigeria government extra-judicial move by invading the residence of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with military armoured tanks and whisking him away on September 14, 2017 is the height of court contempt by the executive arm of the government in a democratic Nigeria. Let not the world forget in a hurry that Nigeria Federal High Court presided over by Justice Binta Nyako granted Mazi Nnamdi Kanu bail on the ground of deteriorating health condition but with the military capture of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his parents as ordered by Nigeria government on September 14, 2017 against the judicial procedures in Nigeria, Mazi…

First, for those who think this is all about Jonathan and Buhari. It is not. Igbos were disappointed that Jonathan did not win. But those whose candidates lose elections lick their wounds. It is allowed. It happens when your candidate loses election. Why did the Igbos invest so much emotions in Jonathan, a non-Igbo Ijaw? It was more because of the fear of their experience in the past 50 years. Nigeria has placed an embargo on any Igbo man becoming Nigerian president. Jonathan was the next best thing. Other parts of Nigeria have supported their sons to the presidency. Some…

We the family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) worldwide under the command and leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu wish to urgently draw the attention of the civilised world to the dastardly plot being perfected by the APC Hausa Fulani led Islamic government of Nigeria against peaceful unarmed members of IPOB residing in Biafra land in the next few weeks. IPOB Intelligence Unit have uncovered elaborate plans by the Islamic APC government of Buhari to incriminate IPOB members in order to justify their controversial and unpopular proscription of IPOB with the attending laughable tag of terrorist organisation against a world…

In his Book ‘The 50th Law’ prolific writer Robert Greene opined that in today’s world, just like every other thing Warfare has evolved, the first to roll out tanks and military hardware (active aggressor) usually suffer the heaviest casualty and loss. This is so because wars are now prosecuted by allies and proxies and to win more allies you must be seen as vulnerable and endangered. Contemporary warriors understand this new phenomenon hence they came up with a strategy of war called Passive aggression. A passive aggressor baits, taunts and VERBALLY attacks his enemy ruthlessly all in a bid to…

Today September 25th in the year 1967, this brave and fearless young man was born into the family of HRH (Sir) (JP) Israel Okwu-Kanu in Isiama Afaraukwu, Ibeku, Umuahia, Abia State. Hate him or love him, in just about 2 years, he was able to ignite a serious debate about the wholesome restructuring of our dear country Nigeria using Biafraexit as his bargaining tool in dealing with an extremely stubborn northern establishment. Something that seemed impossible even before his birth. He is also the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, which was recently illegally declared a “terrorist organisation”…

Sometimes I wonder if Nigerians have ever paid any attention to the National Anthem. Can a nation truly and technically be bound in Freedom? How can one be chained up and at the same time be a free man?, Nigeria my beloved country, something is terribly wrong somewhere; why this prolonged quest of freedom from one of the major stakeholders for over 50 years now? Social Media has apparently made it so difficult to use excessive FORCE to control a group of people. The history of Nigeria that Nigerians were prevented from studying for so many years is all over…

Beyond sentiments, it needs to be emphasised that Nigeria is a sovereign state, with a defined territory recognised by the international community. She is a member of the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), among others. This territory includes the South-east region. While the right to self-determination is guaranteed under the international systems, specifically the United Nations and African Union, this right has laid down procedures that must jbe religiously followed. For instance, while the call for referendum is legal; they do not come by fiat. Referendum is the ultimate result…

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Friday, sued the Federal government of Nigeria and the Nigerian army for proscribing its activities and tagging it a terrorist organisation. The Nigerian Bar Association has a tradition of holding governments accountable to the people. The glorious era of former NBA President Alao Aka-Bashorun among others has always been recalled with pride by many lawyers. This is consistent with the hallowed role of the lawyer as a defender of the rights of the average person and or the oppressed. The average lawyer, nay Nigerian, always looks up to the NBA to show the light in moments of national crisis. This is also in tune with the perception of NBA as the _conscience of the nation._ It was the inimitable Martin Luther…

In one way or another, we all have felt the sting of man’s capacity to wrong his fellow man. But we are also endowed with the God-given spirit to overcome adversity and to make of old enemies, new allies and even brothers. We must clearly articulate our objectives. One cannot be assured that an architect’s fine design will result in a fine building. Much can go awry during the process of transforming idea into brick and mortar. However, we…

A national leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said restructuring will bring much needed balance to the country. The former Lagos State governor, however, said he was against the split-up of the country. Tinubu’s assertion followed repeated pronouncements by President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo that Nigeria’s unity is settled and not open to negotiation. Tinubu, who was the keynote speaker at the annual dinner of the King’s College Old Boys’ Association, on Saturday, described Nigeria as a nation that had not sufficiently defined its governance. The APC leader said, “We are like the…

“Kanu is funded by rich Igbo men who believe that their fate lies in his hands. He is not just the newest irritating boil on the nose of the Nigerian state, but also a dangerous pied piper in Igbo land. The governors knew this…

Part of the reason why Igbo political action is defective is that we talk too much, and act miserably. The current situation with the current regime in Nigeria demands more action, than talk. With all due respect sir, all that you have written below is truth. But it is truth that is already well known. You are making emotional appeals to stones. You cannot squeeze water from stones. AMID IPOB CRISIS… ‘It is better to restructure and correct imbalance’ “Being more pragmatic, separating the nation into small pieces resolves nothing and creates additional problems”. With these words, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Saturday, warned against any attempt to spilt Nigeria. Was I surprised that the Federal Government (FG) declared the unarmed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organisation? No! I am only surprised that many Nigerians were surprised. For those who were surprised, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, cleared their surprises. He said: “All I know is that IPOB has engaged in terrorist activities, viz: clashing with the national army and attempting to seize rifles from soldiers, using weapons such as machetes, Molotov cocktails and sticks, and mounting roadblocks to extort money from people, among others”. On the other hand, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, lectured Nigerians…

If the whole matter was as straightforward as winning the War of Wits and Dialectics with El-Rufai, his “North”, APC or even the wider Status Quo (forces which include some Igbo elements), I would, as the Americans do, say, Let’s Roll, but things are a lot more complicated than that. Whether anyone here sees/believes it or not, the contest for the soul of Nigeria clearly goes deeper than the “Restructuring” debate being dubiously erected afresh by the so-called North as represented by characters like El-Rufai, and his rogue-APC, is a huge ruse, distraction and diversion, designed to buy time for…

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has said the recent military clampdown on the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its subsequent proscription are not the solutions to the Biafra agitation. According to him, so long as Nigerian youths remain unengaged in meaningful employment, they would be disposed to joining forces with individuals or groups leading agitations of all sorts. He blamed Biafra agitation on leadership failure over the years in the country but called for dialogue with those who are agitating in order to look at meaningful solutions that can give them hope. Obi told the Sun newspaper:…
